The Art of Standing Out With Interviews

Updated: Feb 20, 2023

In my previous post, I talked about how and why you should consider utilizing public relations to help your brand story stand out from the crowd, due to its power in helping you build trust and credibility with the right audiences.

Today, I wanted to focus specifically on how interviews can help you stand out with audiences and build credibility, provided you are being featured on the right podcasts, radio/TV shows, magazines, and websites.

1) Finding the Right Media Outlets

Standing out in front of your audiences is about discovering where they spend their time. Just because a new YouTube show approaches you for an interview, doesn't mean you have to say yes. Always ask yourself the question: Is appearing on this podcast, show or magazine going to help me share my story with the audiences I want? Will my audiences read/watch/listen to this? Doing your research into who in your industry has been featured on the outlet, how long the outlet has active for, and the engagement they have their audiences on social media and/or their newsletters will help you answer that question.

2) Getting Comfortable Sharing Your Story

Remember, customers and clients don't book a service or buy a product just because they like the features or the price is right. It's your brand story that will allow them the chance to get to know you, learn to trust you and believe in what you're doing and why you're doing it. Interviews are a fantastic way to build that trust and credibility because they're hearing about you, directly from you.

What you do isn't unique, however, sharing how you do it, why you do it, and the impact you're making is what's going to captivate audiences, educate them and inspire them to reach out to you. Doing interviews with industry specific podcasts, magazines, newsletters, blogs and online shows is a great way to get comfortable sharing your story 1:1 or with a few people, help you work out the kinks with any answers that you want to change, and develop positive relationships with these outlets that support you now and in the future.

3) Leveraging Trusted Platforms to Share Your Story

As I mentioned in my previous post, raising brand awareness through social media and email marketing can only get you so far because the information and promotion is coming from your platforms. Leveraging well respected media outlets that have built their audiences to share your story through interviews, helps build trust among those audiences. You're essentially using those outlets as the 'middle man' to get in front of your customers, where they spend their time. You have these well respected, industry specific (and in some cases, higher profile) championing your story with their audiences and because their audiences know them and trust them, that trust, in part, is transferred to you. It's powerful because you have allies on your side, helping you raise brand awareness and sharing your story.
