Anthony Gruppo UnPeeled

By Shannon Peel

I had the opportunity to talk with Anthony Gruppo and when I did, I discovered a man who is unique and has a lot to teach the world about what it means to be a leader. In February, we started on a ten-month journey to construct a book to help others learn the lessons he learned throughout his career. As we peeled back the layers of his story, I got to know a man whom I respect and admire. But, is he the man in his stories or is there a disconnect between who he thinks he is, and the man others know?

Too often people tell one story about who they are and behave in a contradictory way because they construct a personal brand based on whom they want to be instead of who they are. In the wake of publishing his latest book, Pushers of the Possible, I decided to find out if Anthony C. Gruppo Sr’s personal brand matches the man he says he is. Let’s find out.

Review of 6 Degrees

A Review of Six Degrees of Impact

"Prepare to Break Some Glass."

"Most will agree that traditional business models have been built on a hierarchy of systems and titles. These vertical structures place responsibility at the top and cast long shadows of confusion on the subjects below. To achieve the speed and competitive edge necessary to respond to changes in any business market, we must replace glass ceilings with glass floors providing a total perspective on our surroundings."

This is how the book Six Degrees of Impact by Anthony C. Gruppo Sr and Monique ter Haar starts. From there on it is filled with real advice to help leaders see how to lead from a different point of view. Their minimalist style means there is no distracting fluff and almost every sentence is a great quote on it's own. It is designed with short thought provoking chapters / sections that enable a reader to quickly digest an idea and move on with their day until they have another 5 - 10 minutes to read the next idea. So, you could read a chapter before driving on your daily commute and by the time you got to work, you'd have a new idea about how you can lead your team better.

Use the Six Degrees of Impact to break your vertical corporate glass and stand on a horizontal platform, giving you a 360 degree perspective on opportunity.

Why is Marsh Commercial CEO Anthony Gruppo exiting insurance?

There are many reasons why people might quit their jobs. Often, people think there must be a negative force driving that decision – but that wasn’t the case for Marsh Commercial CEO Anthony Gruppo, who recently announced he will step down from his executive role with the brokerage giant and exit the insurance industry.

In a recent Insurance Business Talk podcast, which you can listen to here, Gruppo said he is stepping down not because of burnout or boredom, but because he felt so blessed to have experienced such a fulfilling career.

“I think that reason [leaving the insurance industry] really generated from … I was so blessed in the United Kingdom and Marsh Commercial to have such a tremendous executive counsel,” Gruppo told Insurance Business global managing editor Paul Lucas during an Insurance Business Talk podcast. “When you're blessed with having great people around you, and [can see] the success of how Marsh commercial has grown, you know when it's the right time [to move on].”

Despite choosing to leave the insurance industry, Gruppo clarified that he found the industry exciting. However, he realized that he wanted to share his talent, skills, and experience beyond the industry. Read full article

Wartime CEO: An Insurance leader’s perspective on an industry at risk as a result of COVID-19

Anthony believes that brokers must prioritise their focus on how to make the industry better, that they must work together to strengthen the industry as a whole, and regain trust. When explaining exactly how insurance brokers must change, Anthony explained that their approach must shift from transactional to consultative – from proactive to reactive, as the paradigm shifts post-Coronavirus.

He says brokers must show acumen to strategically help clients and transfer their knowledge base. “New ideas don’t renew in August”, Anthony said.

Commercial insurance clients are now entering the renewals period, but they are doing so with fundamentally different exposures to those experienced the previous year, and it will be increasingly difficult for brokers to manage risk and long-term premiums...  Read the full interview with Anthony Gruppo

An Interview with Anthony Gruppo

So, what has changed for you in relation to work since our last interview in 2018? AG: What has changed most since we last spoke in my interview in 2018 is that we are now creating a new ecosystem in how we work. A 'work from anywhere' environment, which can be utilised by so many people to hopefully gain work/life balance, and to be able to work in both an office setting from home and what we believe will be satellite locations. Those where colleagues can meet up, be able to discuss their creative ideas and solutions for clients... Read the interview with Anthony Gruppo

By including the Marsh name in ours, we make accessing that wider offering more seamless for those we serve. “From Kirkwall to Plymouth, our colleagues told me that they want a simpler structure that brings decision making closer to the client.
